Continuing a tradition of support to community-based, independent cinemas, Bruce Springsteen and Columbia Records have once again partnered with us to offer a widely acclaimed Springsteen film for charitable screenings across the country.
From April 22 to May 3, The Promise: The Making of Darkness On The Edge of Town will receive a special theatrical run only at Emerging Pictures’ network of community-based cinemas, performing arts centers and independent art-houses as a benefit screening and fundraiser.
Not-for-profits theatres showcasing the film will keep 100% of funds from ticket sales. For-profit venues will keep 50%, donating the remaining funds to a charity of their choice. All benefit screenings will also feature Springsteen merchandise giveaways, with audience members eligible to win The Promise: The Making of Darkness On The Edge of Town BluRay, available at physical and digital retail outlets on May 3rd.
The Promise: The Making of Darkness On The Edge of Town combines never-before-seen footage of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band shot between 1976 and 1978 , including home rehearsals and studio sessions with new interviews with Springsteen, E Street Band members, manager Jon Landau, former-manager Mike Appel, and others closely involved in the making of the record. Directed by Grammy- and Emmy-winning filmmaker Thom Zimny, The Promise has received a rapturous critical response around the world, including at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival, the BFI London Festival, and International Rome Film Festival. More info on the film here. And for more on Bruce, visit backstreets.com/ or brucespringsteen.net.

I would like to see the Capitol Theater in Olympia, WA added to this list.
Deborah Nissim | March 25, 2011 at 3:46 pm
You’ve got the theaters for Greenville, SC and Dallas, Texas mixed up. I got all excited for the David Lynch coffee, but they won’t have that in Greenville. Oops, looks like the one in Southampton, NY is wrong, too.
matt | March 25, 2011 at 3:59 pm
Ugh. Nothing in Austin, TX?
Heather | March 25, 2011 at 4:13 pm

what about LA?
Laurie J Bradburn | March 25, 2011 at 7:18 pm
You have an error in your theatre listings-Newport RI is the Jane Pickens Theatre, not the Peace Theatre.
Steve | March 25, 2011 at 7:44 pm
Why is Tucson ignored? Arizona? hello?
Joshua Zinger | March 25, 2011 at 7:49 pm
Is there any way to add an additional theater. I work for a non-profit theater in Ohio and the closest showing is three hours away. Thanks.
Ana LeVrier | March 25, 2011 at 7:50 pm
Bummer, no Houston date. Bruce Rules!
Ken Paige | March 26, 2011 at 10:56 am
I live in Seattle and, would love to see this screening. Bellingham WA is listed as a location with a link to “Smith Opera House” as a venue. That link takes you to a location in Geneva, New York.
Suggestions?
thx
Author comment by sharp | March 28, 2011 at 11:42 am
Hi, Ken. Thanks for your interest in this Bruce benefit screening. The link has been corrected — the Bellingham screenings (3 total) are taking place at the Pickford Film Center on April 29, 30 and May 1.
Author comment by sharp | March 28, 2011 at 11:46 am
Hi, Joshua. Emerging Pictures and Columbia Records are offering this benefit to cinemas and theatres in Emerging’s existing network. We’re actively expanding that network every month. Feel free to send us more information about the non-profit theater you work for. Thanks for your interest!
Author comment by sharp | March 28, 2011 at 11:47 am
Thanks, Laurie. We’ve corrected that error. All links and listings are accurate — theatres should have details on their website very soon.
Author comment by sharp | March 28, 2011 at 12:09 pm
Hi, Matt in Austin. We’re bummed ourselves that our Austin venue, the Long Center for the Arts, is booked solid and is won’t be able to host this event. Sorry to let you down. Thanks for your interest. We hope to bring more events like this to Austin in 2011.
Jeannette Amodeo | March 28, 2011 at 1:10 pm
Does anyone know if the theatrical release is the original version or the May 3 release version with bonus material? I was in the conversation with the fans bonus (first fan asking a question). Since I was lucky enough to be in the studio with Bruce for 2 hours, I’d like to pay it forward and maybe tell about my experience, if the theater thinks it might sell a few more tickets. Or not lol. I totally froze when I met him face to face afterwards btw.
Paul Stanzione | March 28, 2011 at 1:34 pm
Will San Diego ever get some Boss Time? Never a live show. Never anything like this. C’mon Boss, hook us up in San Diego!!!
Scott Hawley | March 28, 2011 at 3:28 pm
Hi, Scott from Binghamton. Could you please find a theater in Binghamton or near it? (Syracuse or Scranton) Love the new CD. Would like to see E-Street perform it in its entirety.

How about The Colonial in Pittsfield Mass or Mass MoCA in North Adams, MA?
Sue | March 28, 2011 at 9:20 pm
Only 1 tiny spot in New Jersey?? Gee, that shouldn’t be too crowded.
Paul Cain | March 28, 2011 at 10:27 pm
Hey. You should hook up with the great Belcourt Theater in Nashville. It’s a great place, showing rare films and featuring musical shows, too.
Theneghan | March 28, 2011 at 10:31 pm
Buffalo……where is Buffalo
Steve | March 28, 2011 at 11:37 pm
Great. I can finally go to one of these. Bryn Mawr Pa. The theatre is just down the block from the legandary Main Point.

Michelle m. | March 29, 2011 at 10:56 am
Why no Detroit area?
Matty | March 29, 2011 at 11:02 am
I would love to see the film showed in my hometown, Wilkes-Barre, PA. We have a beautiful, 1,300-seat theater, the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts.
Author comment by sharp | March 29, 2011 at 11:48 am
Hi, Jeannette. The version for the benefit screening is the original version. We’ll be providing copies of the forthcoming BluRay for contest giveaways at every screening (2-3 per show), which includes the bonus materials you mention. Tha’ts amazing that you got to be in the studio with Bruce! Please contact the participating Emerging Cinema nearest you to ask if they’d like to take you up on that offer to share your experience.
Shirl R. Pilote | March 29, 2011 at 12:36 pm
Can you add another theatre in the Central New Jersey area, maybe in the Asbury Park Convention Center? Thanks for considering this!
Jeannette Amodeo | March 29, 2011 at 12:36 pm
Thanks, Sharp. Looks like it’s already sold out in NJ. Not surprised. You never know, Bruce might actually pop in. I’ll try PA
Kim | March 29, 2011 at 8:48 pm
Perhaps a showing at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor, MI could be added? Great classic restored non profit theater on the UM campus.
Doug | March 29, 2011 at 11:33 pm
I would really appreciate a screening in/near the Quad Cities IA/IL.
Peter | March 30, 2011 at 3:09 am
Bellingham? I’m with Rob, Olympia would be perfect for me, though I might drive to Seattle. But Bellingham? Why?
Dave Woof | March 30, 2011 at 6:06 am
will there be any screening in good old sunny England ,if so don`t forget the west country.
Author comment by sharp | March 30, 2011 at 10:57 am
Hey Peter and Rob near Olympia (and to all other folks wondering why there’s not a screening in certain cities),
Since these benefit screenings of “The Promise” are being featured exclusively at Emerging Cinemas, only theatres in our network will be participating. We hope to have a venue in Seattle in the near future, and who knows, maybe Olympia’s not far behind. But for now the nearest screen we have is the Pickford Film Center in Bellingham, a wonderful independent art-house cinema that plays a combination of new indie and foreign films, classics, cult hits, and obscure gems. Highly recommend you check them out if you’re near Bellingham.
Thanks to you all for your enthusiastic interest in this event. Stay in touch!
Author comment by sharp | March 30, 2011 at 11:01 am
Hi, Dave. No screenings in England on this particular event. Thanks from across the pond!

How about the Tennessee Theatre in Knoxville, Tennessee? Or the Capitol in Maryville? I have the work Tivo’d from the HBO screenings and watch it all of the time, but I would still attend a showing if one was reasonably close to home.

The Terrace Theatre in Charleston, SC would be an ideal location for this viewing. Bruce had his first concert here a couple of years ago since the Darkness tour, he has a huge fan base here. The audience and Bruce were on fire!!
saknews | April 1, 2011 at 8:41 pm
How about Somerville Theatre outside Boston? Bruce played a solo gig there in 2003 to raise money for a worthy cause, a friend’s struggling magazine.
Scott Smith | April 1, 2011 at 8:57 pm

Paul in Rochester NY | April 7, 2011 at 7:55 am
The Little Theatre on East Ave. in Rochester would seem an ideal candidate. It has multiple screens, is a 501c nonorofit, and there is a large cadre of Springsteen fans here

Bread & Roses is the nonprofit beneficiary for the film at the Balboa in San Francisco on April 28. We bring live music to those who are isolated in San Francisco Bay Area institutions. Thanks Bruce for your generosity in donating the proceeds of “The Promise” screenings to nonprofit film theatres and organizations nation-wide!
Do you know if anyone from the film lives in Bay Area? If so, I would like to get in touch…
